So I am the person out there who has decided they want to compete.
But I don't know how to go about it .....
**********************************************
Sound familiar? Thought we should start a thread about it. Lets pull resources and add as much ideas as possible, hopefully if someone new is thinking like that it will hold lots of information.
Big plus is that we have a lot of competitiors new and seasoned with lots of knowledge!

A Gym A Trainer (someone who can guide me through that process)
But what do I look for when I am deciding?

Well as a trainer myself-this is what I would recommend:
Qualified Competed themselves Resume of clients with references Easy to get on with Flexible in their diet approach(I still see alot of trainers giving out the same diet to all their clients!) Screens you properly is able to communicate their knowledge or experience concisely and clearly A problem solver Knows the rules, regulations and different federations available(or can find out for you)
With looking at a gym: A wide selection of weights(especially free weights) and cardio equipment is probably the most important factor.

Good input Beckie.
So what federation should I choose? What class should I compete in?

Well it all depends on the goals you set with your trainer. If you want to come in bigger and really lean, the option is either NZFBB physique or NABBA figure, whereas if you want to come is softer(but not actually soft!) and rounder with not as much muscle then NABBA shape,NZFBB figure or Bodyfitness is the class for you. The main difference between Bodyfitness and figure in NZFBB is muscle size and leanness-Bodyfitness is for the ladies that want to compete internationally and need to have MORE muscle but not be too lean-figure is a bit of a grey area, but you will definitely be marked down for excessive leanness. If you don't know what class to enter go along to one of the NZFBB local seminars-we have one coming up on July 2nd here in Wellington and its mainly for novice competitors!

Beckie make sure you promote those seminars on here.
So I have decided which federation to compete with.
Decided on a diet.
Got my cardio and training worked out.
What do I do when the going gets tough??

Get a training buddy-it definitely helps! Find out who else is competing in your area and set up regular meetings. Also web boards are a GREAT place to network with other people in the same position-a web journal also helps because even if you have bad day(like most of us do!) you can look back at your progress.

Or prior to reaching this point - mouth off to way too many people. Then when it does get tough sheer pride will pull you thru!!!!
