HIT is the BEST way to lose fat efficiently. When getting ready ofr my show last year,my trainer had me do steady state initially then closer into the show I did intervals 6 days a week for 30 mins

Ok,so this was my cardio regime from Weeks 16-8: 20-30 min steady state 4x per week increasing to 5 by 8 weeks out. I was using a mixture of the elliptical, treadmill, bike and rower as I get bored really easily. My heart rate seemed to be the critical element and is one everyone should experiment with. For my age my minimum HR was around 129bpm,but I found this too low and instead got better results at 140-145 bpm. At 8 week out Joe had me doing several shorter cardio workouts a day to keep my metabolism elevated. Every morning I would go for a 25 min very brisk hill walk and then in the afternoon following weights another 25 min session this time intervals or HIT. Considering I don't do alot of cardio anyway I started off on a low level(7-8) and gradually built it up to 12-14.Initially I could barely do 10 mins without wanting to pass out particularly on the elliptical I was really gasping for air. I actually found the treadmill alot easier for HIT as I didn't have to take my hands off anything to push buttons. With the treadmill my intervals consisted of increasing levels of 2 mins incline walking at nearly jog pace then one min slower walking-some days depending on what I'd been training I could do this for up to 30 mins. I can't run due to my biomechanics and chronic shin splints so power walking is about all I can manage. Throughout this diet-training cycle I could 'feel' when my body was giving up hte fat and I could also 'feel' when my body was burning muscle(if I went over 155 bpm,I lost muscle overnight!).

Thats really interesting Beckie - contrary to what a lot of people (girls especially) believe in doing cardio about 2 hours per day!

I know Lisa, and I STILL see people doing that! I have to balance my fat loss vs losing muscle so its a really fine line. I still needed to lose more fat for my last show but I was starting to lose muscle so we had to be careful. I think once I build up a bit more muscle on my upper body,I will be able to do this.....

Hey Beckie, I used to find interval training (HIT) awesome for increasing fitness levels and breaking thru barriers but like you I have to balance it cos my wee muscles have a tendancy to disappear rapidly.

hey Lisa...alot of guys do 2 to 4 hours of cardio a day too!!!!!
Interestingly, the pros are doing 1 hour cardio in am and 1 hour cardion in pm. PLUS 2 hours training a day. Beauty of cardio is it DOES allow you to keep calorie intake high. Getting ripped by doing minimal cardio and simply dropping calories is "old school". Modern way is to use cardio to burn the fat, muscle to grow them with steady, resonable high amounts of calories based on your metabolism. Dropping calories only slows your metabolism which not only stops fat loss but stops muscle growth and retention as well. Use cardio I say to allow you to get ripped while keeping your food intake high.

yep but old school allows for some semblance of normality in life ie having to go to work etc. Boring but true. Those guys go home and sleep in between
