Whats the average time you set aside for contest prep?
Years ago it was the standard 12 weeks but now you hear people starting any where from 24 weeks to 8 or even 6!

I like to get serious at 20 weeks but not actually dieting till about 10-12. At the 20 week mark I'm just making sure all my food and fluid intake is as perfect as possible

I'll start around 20 weeks out, usually hit the hard dieting and up the cardio from 10-12 weeks out. Time of year, eg: winter or summer for a prep can vary this a couple of weeks either way.
If for example though I compete in October and be good leading into Christmas and New Years ( staying close ) so as not to allow bodyfat levels to get high a prep for say April/March will be a lil' less strict and I won't hit the really hard regimented faze till 8-10 weeks out.

Do you do much cardio or try to manipulate as much as possible through diet?

last year I started at 21 weeks out,had a 6 week mass building cycle then slowly dropped my cals from there. I am still trying to find the balance betweenthe length of diet and maximum muscle retention though...

I think I need to start my bulk earlier out and concentrate more on fat burning because that seems to be my main problem area. If I do too much high intensity cardio I burn muscle so I have to be extremely careful-I have taken to monitoring my heart rate alot more because the higher it gets the mnore likely I am to burn muscle.
